EXPLOSION TAKES IPL CHAMPIONSHIP
Nweke Scores Game Winner Over Richmond SCOR
Richmond, VA (February 8, 2014) – Regular season champs and top seeded, Richmond SCOR FC, played host for the 2014 IPL Championship match and their 3rd meeting with the Virginia Beach Explosion FC on Saturday night in the new fieldhouse on the SCOR campus. With wins in both regular season matchups against the Explosion, SCOR came into the game as the favorites to continue their run through the IPL and take the 2014 title – but Virginia Beach forward, Charles Nweke, had other ideas in leading the Explosion and claiming the IPL crown.
The action was fast from the start as both teams pushed the tempo of the game and physical play to set the tone for the match. Nweke got the Explosion on the board first with a put back off of a save from SCOR keeper, Kevin Cash, to take a 1-0 lead. Chello Vocotour answered back for SCOR off an assist by Tyler Pardue to knot the game at 1 apiece heading to the 2nd quarter. The Explosion continued to press the attack taking the lead before the half on a strike by Tyler Cyrus before a third quarter equalizer by Sam Na sent the IPL final match to the fourth quarter tied at 2.
“Things couldn’t have played out better to set the stage for a great fourth quarter and an appropriate ending to a very positive season for the IPL” says commissioner Kevin Darcy “The pace of the game and the number of quality players on both teams speaks volumes for the current state and future of this league. Both teams were deserving of the result on the night but unfortunately only one could go away as the Champion of IPL.”
The final quarter started much like the opening three as both teams built quality chances but were turned away by stingy defenses and goalkeeping. Match MVP, Charles Nweke, after a first half goal and putting constant pressure on the SCOR defenders all night – broke through and slotted home the eventual game winner in the 9th minute. From there the action was furious as the home Richmond squad pushed forward and created chances only to come up empty as time expired ending the IPL 2014 season. Explosion keeper, Casey Shotts, was solid all night registering 9 saves and fending off numerous attacks by SCOR.
“Congratulations goes out to the Explosion for taking the IPL championship away from home. Never easy to travel in this league and after a couple earlier defeats against SCOR the odds were in favor of the home team. IPL would like to thank SCOR for hosting this final match and 2013-14 IPL Title Sponsor Monument Sports Group for their dedication to IPL and soccer in the region. This was a very successful year for the IPL and we look forward to growing the league and continuing the quality for next season.”

EXPLOSION ADVANCE TO IPL FINALS
Nweke Nets Four to End United’s Season
Virginia Beach, VA (January 28, 2014) – One side of the IPL Finals is set as the second seeded Virginia Beach Explosion FC held home court advantage and knocked off ETA United 6-3 Sunday night at the Fieldhouse. Top seeded Richmond SCOR FC will host the fourth seed Fredericksburg Generals in Richmond on Superbowl Sunday to complete the 2014 IPL Championship matchup.
United got off to a fast start with a goal by Gavin Held to take an early lead but failed to score again and went into halftime down 2-1. The Explosion pushed the lead to 3-1, with a goal by Charles Nweke, midway through the third quarter and put a dagger into the ETA side with their fourth goal as time expired ending the quarter. United pulled a goal back in the 4th quarter cutting the lead to 2 goals but Virginia Beach answered back trading goals and finishing off the ETA side with a 6-3 victory and a trip to the IPL Championship.
Explosion forward Charles Nweke led all scorers with four goals on the night along with Matt Bright and Sam Hunter rounding out the scoring with a goal apiece. United was led by Sean Moriarty with 2 goals and one by Gavin Held. “The better team got the result tonight as Nweke was a handful and their overall speed and rhythm of play was too difficult to match.” Says United coach Kevin Darcy “We had our share of chances but just weren’t good enough in front of goal. To make matters worse we turned it over and gave up a few goals against the run of play - which ultimately did us in.”
The IPL playoffs continue this weekend when the number 1 seed Richmond SCOR FC host the 4th seeded Fredericksburg Generals 5:00PM at Richmond SCOR. The IPL Championship will take place the following weekend with the IPL All Stars competing in a showcase match to end the 2014 season in mid-February. IPL’s UNITED KNOCKS OFF RICHMOND
Explosion Ends Regular Season with Win Over Generals
Williamsburg, VA (January 21, 2014) – Match week 6 came to a close with the regular season champion Richmond SCOR FC getting knocked from the unbeaten ranks on the road by ETA United 8-7 Saturday night. Virginia Beach Explosion FC held serve at home with a 6-2 victory over the Fredericksburg Generals, maintaining the second seed heading into the IPL playoffs this upcoming weekend.
After a 4-3 loss in Richmond earlier in the season and 2 other defeats away from home, both by a one goal margin, United was confident heading into the final regular season match against unbeaten SCOR FC. That confidence was evident as ETA’s Doug Ernst volleyed home the 1st goal of the match less than a minute into the game, followed up by a Scott Colman blast pushing the United lead to 2-0 before Richmond found its stride. SCOR quickly regrouped and showed why they are atop the IPL as they took hold of the match and a 4-3 lead heading into half time. As the second half started much like the end of the first, with Richmond pushing the tempo and extending their lead to 3 goals, United responded with a late tally closing the gap to 6-4 heading to the fourth quarter. Just as all hope for the home ETA side looked dashed, with SCOR again taking a three goal lead (7-4)with 7 minutes left to play, United ran off the next 3 goals and finished it off with the game winner in the last minute to earn the victory 8-7. Ernst and Colman notched a second goal each for United with Dave Giunty, Cameron Smith, Gavin Held and Sean O’Reagan rounding out the scoring. SCOR FC was led by Austin Brooks with 3 goals and Sam Na, Fred Albino, Casey Smith and Forrest White finishing with a goal apiece. United net minder Jeff Bolton kept the home team in the game with big saves throughout the 2nd half giving his team a chance to pull things out down the stretch. Kevin Cash was solid in the goal for Richmond registering 12 saves on the night.
Virginia Beach turned a 2-1 halftime lead into a 6-2 victory with a second half flurry against visiting Fredericksburg. Goal scorers for the Explosion were Josh Nolz, Kyle Baker, Sonny Landry and Tyler Cyrus with 1 apiece. Charles Neweke led Virginia Beach with 2 goals and was a handful all night for the Generals to deal with. The shorthanded Fredericksburg squad was led by Dom Bickham and Tyler Frederich with a goal each. The visitors pushed hard until late in the fourth quarter when a quick counter attack by the Explosion provided a 4 goal cushion and an end to the Generals comeback attempt. “I give a lot of credit to the Generals as they travelled light on numbers but not in their efforts to get a result tonight.” Says Explosion GM John Teller. “It was real important to get a win tonight and hold on to the number two seed for the upcoming IPL playoffs. It has been a great season and we look forward to our re-match with United and a hopeful trip to the 2014 finals.”
The IPL playoffs will begin this weekend when the number 1 seed Richmond SCOR FC host the 4th seeded Fredericksburg Generals and the 3rd seed ETA United travel to 2nd seed Virginia Beach Explosion FC. IPL MATCH WEEK 5
Richmond SCOR FC Remains Unbeaten
Williamsburg, VA (January 15, 2013) – As the IPL regular season comes to a close Richmond SCOR has continued to dominate play and maintain an unbeaten mark through match week 5. On the other end of the spectrum, the Fredericksburg Generals got their 1st win of the season and head into week six in hopes of moving in to the 3rd seed for the league playoffs and avoid the hot SCOR side in the 1st round.
League leading SCOR FC jumped out to an early lead, and never looked back in handing the Virginia Beach Explosion FC an 8-1 defeat Saturday night. SCOR was led by the explosive play of the Albino brothers, Fred and Felipe, who combined for 3 goals and were dangerous throughout the match. The SCOR defense was equally strong led by Tyler Pardue, Bruno Ramos, and the goal keeping of IPL veteran Kevin Cash. BJ Bourne, Casey Smith, Austin Brooks, Forrest White, and Andy McIntosh tallied a goal apiece for Richmond with the lone Explosion goal scored on an Isaiah Forbes blast. SCOR FC moves to 5-0 on the season with Virginia Beach Explosion holding on to 2nd place in the IPL at 2-2-1.
The Fredericksburg Generals knocked off ETA United 5-4 at home on Saturday night to notch their 1st win of the season. IPL’s MID SEASON REPORT
Richmond & Virginia Beach on Top of Division
Williamsburg, VA (December 30, 2013) – As the IPL hit the mid-season mark Richmond SCOR FC has separated itself from the pack staying undefeated (3-0) and taking command of the Mid Atlantic division. Virginia Beach Explosion FC kept pace (2-1) with SCOR FC, posting a tough road win and sole possession of 2nd place in the IPL table. If consistency is a litmus test that defines a competitive league then once again the match week 3 results spoke volumes for the IPL as both matches ended with 4-3 results.
ETA United travelled to Richmond SCOR FC for an afternoon kickoff, scoring the 1st goal of the match from Jamie Gunderson and playing with a youthful roster and high confidence level. Sam Na answered for SCOR FC followed up with a blast from Austin Brooks to put the home side on top at 2-1 heading to intermission. United came out quickly to start the 2nd half with a goal by Zach Harris to tie the game and a strike from Alfonso Speed to take the lead at 3-2. Both keepers, Kendal Pressey (ETA) and Kevin Cash (SCOR FC), showed up big throughout the match keeping goals to a premium and each team in reach of the result. Nick Surkamp broke the drought for Richmond and Forrest scored what proved to be the game winner for SCOR FC off an assist from Joe Grossman – keeping Richmond SCOR FC to the top of the IPL standings.
The Fredericksburg Generals were in search of their 1st victory and played host to Virginia Beach Explosion FC Saturday evening at the Fieldhouse. The Generals struck first with a goal by Muricio Mizano and held the Explosion scoreless until a Rob Wright strike in the 2nd quarter that knotted the score at 1 apiece heading to half time. Virginia Beach’s Kyle Baker broke the tie in the 3rd quarter but an equalizer by Fredericksburg’s Leo Sanchez sent the game to the final stanza even at 2-2. As the action continued to go back and forth the Explosion again took the lead with a goal by Tyler Cyrus. The Generals refused to let up and scored the tying goal by Alex Silver, only to concede the game winner to Virginia Beach’s Tinsea Ayalew with 4 minutes remaining in the game. Fredericksburg had several chances in the last few minutes with a man up advantage but the Explosion killed off the power play, earning a tough 4-3 win.
“We are extremely pleased with the level of play in the IPL as each game has been fast paced and very competitive. All but 2 matches to date have been decided by 1 goal with those games finishing with a 2 goal differential.” says IPL commissioner Kevin Darcy. “The league is loaded with quality players and the second half of the season promises to be great.”
Match week 4 in the IPL has the ETA United hosting Virginia Beach Explosion FC and Fredericksburg Generals on the road to battle Richmond SCOR.

IPL’s RICHMOND REMAINS UNBEATEN
ETA United Wins Defensive Battle with Fredericksburg
Williamsburg, VA (December 23, 2013) – Match week #2 in the IPL “Indoor Premiere League” took on a defensive tone with 8 goals scored in 2 full matches. On Saturday Richmond SCOR remained undefeated with a 4-2 victory against visiting Virginia Beach Explosion FC and on Sunday ETA United grinded out a 2-0 win against a shorthanded Fredericksburg Generals in the friendly confines of Williamsburg’s WISC. The 2-0 win by United marked the 1st shutout in IPL’s 3 year history in a match full of action but short on scoring.
Richmond SCOR sits atop the IPL with a 2-0 record with their victory at home against the Explosion. SCOR went out on top at the 5 minute mark on an upper 90 blast by Sam Na. The second Richmond goal was scored by Joe Grossman on a redirected through ball that caromed off of a Virginia Beach defender. The Explosion battled back with a quick strike to end the half that Richmond Goal Keeper Kevin Cash never saw. SCOR captain Andy Macintosh scored the first of two decisive goals on a quick give and go off of a Bruno Ramos feed. Macintosh scored his second, Richmond's fourth goal of the night, on a beautiful individual effort beating the last defender and the onrushing Explosion keeper to finish with his right foot. Virginia Beach continued to push hard, and pulled one back with about 3:30 left to make the score 4-2.
With the holiday season playing havoc on player availability, the Fredericksburg Generals travelled light with only one substitute available for their match with ETA United. Host United entered the game with both keepers out inserting defender Kendal Pressey into goal - with stand in Pressey providing the 1st shutout in IPL history. “Credit goes out to the Generals as they worked hard and competed well with limited players. Our guys got caught in a bit of a trap underestimating the fitness and competitive spirit of Fredericksburg coming out slow in the opening stages of the match. Once we got it going with quick possession and pressing defensively the game turned in our favor.” says United coach Kevin Darcy. “Kendal was without a doubt the man of the match on the night as he provided support as a 6th attacker but also came up with a few big saves to preserve the victory. Although we must detail our finishing, it was a good defensive effort and the result sets up an important match next week in Richmond against SCOR.” Tyler Claire and Sean Gregory scored the goals for ETA United, who moves to 1-1 on the season.
Match week 3 in the IPL has the Fredericksburg Generals hosting Virginia Beach Explosion FC and ETA United on the road to battle Richmond SCOR.
